The War of Angelic Succession

Chapter Three
Dark Goings-On in the City of Reclamation

The team reached the city of Reclamation, safely delivering Bodric the merchant to his home. In a local bar they met El Lobo Aguila, a drow monk and Jean Grey, an eladrin psion, in a bear fight. As they walked around the city, after the excitement, The Crimson Dove and Walks-With-Beasts were identified as army deserters and forced into hiding.

In hiding, the team met a member of the local Blacktooth gang who offered them safe hiding if they just grabbed a small magic item from the crypt under the deserted local cathedral. Fighting off the dead and battling through a kruthik nest, the team eventually found The Beacon of the Lampmaker, and took it back to the gang. Sadly, Walks-With-Beasts was gone when they returned.

Suddenly the team realized they had removed the city’s magical ward. Only quick thinking prevented Reclamation from falling to the cold embrace of the dead, and the team returned to the crypt of the cathedral to see Walks-With-Beasts being sacrificed to summon a host of the undead. The rites were stopped just in time, but not before Walks With Beasts was lost, and poor Doglan had died on the hard stone floor. Fortunately the army doctor was able to revive him, for a price.

The Crimson Dove was redeemed in the eyes of the army, for saving the city of Reclamation, and our heroes could finally walk the streets with their heads held high.

Their travails in Reclamation, however, would turn out to be just a prelude to the events that were to follow.

Chapter Two
The Blackfang Turnpike

From the benighted hamlet of Col Fen, The Crimson Dove and Walks With Beasts saw an explosion of magic out in the marsh. Intrigued, they ventured out to see the last stand of a gnome and an elf cleric, fighting off a horde of foul zombies. Our heroes intervened, driving off the undead, but not before the cleric was dragged out into the marshland to his doom.

As they returned to the hamlet, the gnome introduced himself as Adolphus Von Zurn, the last of a band of treasure hunters who were searching for the fabled treasure, “the Heart of the Fens”. Now on his own, Von Zurn decided to abandon the search, and joined our heroes team.

In Col Fen, the merchant Bodric offered 1000 gp to the team, if they accompanied him on the trip to the city of Reclamation. Before leaving,a number of other townspeople joined the trip, preferring their chances on the road than in Col Fen.

Our heroes made a sorry sight as they travelled along the Blackfang Turnpike road, shepherding a rag tag band of travelers.

On the way they met a strange little boy who called himself Doglan. He showed them the way to a lifegiving spring, where they were set upon by an evil resurrectionist carrying a crystal skull. Though the adventurers survived, the party was reduced to a single lady, Mara Kres, her young son, Allen, the strange little Doglan and Bodric the merchant.

The Crimson Dove grew amorously attached to Mara Kres, but was saddened to see that her eye was turned to the diminutive Von Zurn. Instead, little Doglan took a liking to The Dove, viewing him as the father he never had.

But 5 miles from the walls of Reclamation, our heroes encountered a huge band of the walking dead. Instinctively the group knew death was near, but to their surprise the zombies took no notice of them, instead walking determinedly into the Blackfang Mountains…

Out of the fog appeared a single zombie. It stood for a second, its head lolling to one side as it stared blankly at the adventurers. Doglan whimpered, cowering behind The Crimson Dove as suddenly a second, then a third, then a whole horde of the foul creatures emerged from the swirling mists. Realizing that there was no escape, Walks-With-Beasts unsheathed her daggers for the final battle. But as the undead advanced it became clear that, tonight at least, they were not hungry. Instead the mass of cadavers walked solemnly on; across the turnpike road and up into the hills; onwards into the Blackfang Mountains.

Chapter One
Flight in the Dark

Having deserted their posts from the horrific battle of Blue Rock, Walks-WIth-Beasts and The Crimson Dove found themselves fleeing along the high road, heading for refuge in the city of Makalau Gow. 3 days into the 6-day trek, their camp was set upon by a horde of freshly-dead zombies, and they fled south, across the River Mald. Soaking wet from the driving rain, they eventually found the hamlet of Col Fen and rested there overnight, after promising to help out the desperate citizens. The following midday, they investigated the graveyard of Col Fen, destroying a host of foul undead beings and rescuing a couple of traumatized villagers. The source of the evil in the graveyard was identified as an onyx skull, which Walks-With-Beasts smashed between her vicous kukris. The miasma in the graveyard was thus lifted, but evil still stalked the grey marshes…

With the onyx skull shattered, the graveyard was sanctified once more. But even as the adventurers left the grounds, the rose petals blew away on a breeze that no-one could feel. The tide of the restless dead had been stemmed, but still the people of Col Fen looked uneasily toward the mire. Countless pairs of eyes, burning with hatred for the living, stared back.
